The Stelvio – as I recently read, is called the “Wonder of the World” of road construction. Rarely it is so sparsely trafficked as on this morning in May 2017. THE opportunity to take panoramic shots of the first (although, actually, the last …) ten hairpin bends.

The 48 hairpin bends of the Stelvio are counted from the top of the pass – which is why the first hairpin bend into the valley is called the 48er Ried. “Ried” is a Tyrolean dialect term for “narrow bend”. All the way down to Prato, every bend has its own name – you can find the last 10 here:
