Crazy: I’ve been riding my current motorbike boots – Daytona Evo Sports GTX – since 2001. THAT speaks for quality. After well over 130,000 kilometres under the soles, it’s time for an update. Even more as my new leather suit calls for matching footwear.

The Daytona concept of a double-shell motorcycle boot with a separate inner and outer shoe has always convinced me. After my first wild supermoto rides with torn ligaments and broken toes, I knew I needed something stable on my feet. But the best boot of all, the ultimate Security Evo, was never financially feasible. Despite my devotion to the finest handmade materials: I could not and would not spend a month’s salary on it. But I knew the day would come.
I have been wearing the cheaper Evo Sports GTX since 2001. The pair, which by a funny coincidence is actually a trio (I sent one boot in for repair at some point and got a completely new pair back) is still going strong. Admittedly, the gearshift reinforcement so urgently needed on my Ducati got lost somewhere in the French Alps and stable standing is no longer possible because of the soles that have been ground down all around. I like to feel my lean angle with my feet, which unfortunately affects the material.
They’re still waterproof – when I’m not riding in the rain for hours on end – and they fit like a dream: slip them on and forget about them. The Velcro on the inner shoes is still holding, and the zips on the outer shell are still intact. That’s incredible after 20 years in the harsh world of motorcycling.
Over the years, the tread on the original grippy sole has disappeared, making my beloved off-road photography hikes more challenging. In fact, I have been switching to walking boots more and more often. Driving and falling on the supermotos has left deep scars. The leather has faded under the sun of many summers. But I have to admit: the boots have never seen the slightest bit of care … The change between icy torrents and tropical heat on a trip to the Maritime Alps finally turned it olfactorically to the left. But hey, after more than 20 years, they were just doing their job.
New arrival –
Daytona Security Evo G3
I had been keeping my eyes open for a long time. On Black Friday 2022 I finally found the Security Evo G3 in red and white in a well-known online shop. Although the price was already heavily reduced, there was another 20% discount. Well then …
The G3s are snug and heavy on the foot, weighing 1165 grams each. My old Sports weigh 925 grams each. The quality of the feel is first class, as you would expect: Non-slip sole, outer shell of extremely durable kangaroo leather, extra thick and stitched on the motorcycle side. Finest goatskin inside for easy entry and socially acceptable perspiration. Wide, powerful Velcro® fasteners and a ruthlessly stable aramid liner, like a ski boot. The zip can be used with gloves, and the zip handle is generously sized.
So from now on I’ll be wearing boots that, according to the manufacturer, are made up of around 120 individual parts, all assembled by hand. It’s noticeable: Frey Daytona uses only the best raw materials, and there is no doubt: with a little care and cosmetics my old Evo Sports will last another 10 years.
